Character Bags was born on a sunny day of May 2003 in Salisbury University's very small costume shop on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Having just completed my final costuming project, a dress I would later wear to graduation, I found myself in need of two gifts. Being a poor college student with no money I decided to make something; after all it's the thought that counts right?
The first Character Bags were gifts for my mother and sister, two small beach bags that have survived to this day. After successfully completing these bags I was hit by the sewing bug and wanted to make everyone I knew and loved some sort of bag! I could not stop myself. It was a way to hone my sewing skills while getting positive feedback about the bags.
I have always had a love of fabrics and textures; I'm the annoying woman who walks around clothing stores feeling the merchandise instead of buying it! I love fabric stores and am so happy to be able to build from those fabrics and share my love of accessories with others! Sometimes there is nothing better than pulling out my sewing machine, popping in a good movie and putting a bag together!
I now find myself living in a very cute garden apartment in Jersey City, NJ, right outside of New York City. The big apple has been a wonderful, inspiring, challenging and amazing place to live! There have been a few changes in my own life that I know will reflect in my designs. Finishing graduate school and moving heading out into the "real" world (what's so real about it??) have had a real influence on some of my ideas and hence some of my bags. Keep an eye out for a few professional, work related products...don't worry— the character will still be there! Promise!
Stay tuned for new additions to the Character Bags line.
I am also trying to create new and exciting bags and accessories to add to the site. I enjoy keeping the people around me on their toes...so make sure you come back and check in every now and again!
